Searching for a moderate hike with a spectacular waterfall? Well Little Mashel Falls is perfect for any beginner or family hike. Take a seat in the oval office and pack a fat lip, here’s a quick overview of the Bitchin' crew's hike to Little Mashel Falls.
After a 24 hour binger at our friends' home stead, with an abundance of alcohol of course, we wake up with fucked stomachs and throbbing minds so intense it was like trying to squeeze a cinder block with one hand. We ate a quick breakfast of eggs, left over chicken, and corn tortillas with a shot of Powerade for the uncomfortable hangover. After consumption, we gear up for the beautiful Pacific Northwest 80 degree weather.
We packed in a Crosstrek tighter than my Copenhagen mint can, blasting country music through the Ohop valley. The scenic drive through the sticks is breathtaking. With the majestic white covered volcanic beast in the background, makes the entire valley and vehicle feel so small. Rainier is a sight for sore eyes. Definitely is a must visit when in Washington.
The drive through the 161 takes us to Eatonville, a small town surrounded by green pine and an ambiance of pure Americana pride. We parked right off of Highway 7 Mountain Highway in the dirt lot of Pack Forest. I’ll place the address at the end of the blog for your interest.
The warm sun and fresh pine air surrounded us like a warm blanket sitting around a bonfire. Bring your camera as this place has an abundance of wildlife and scenery to get any photographer hard. Being a lazy fuck, this hike was easier than microwaving a foiled wrapped burrito from the local taco truck. A beginner hike of the ages.
With an overall distance of 5 miles, approximately 2.5 miles from the staging area to the falls and back. There was a very slightly inclined and declined area making the hike even better. The trail is marked with small yellow diamonds barely holding on by a thread, helping hungover hikers to direct them to the falls. You’ll see a rock on the ground sprayed painted, in shitty orange paint that says FALLS. Follow that and it will lead you to Little Mashel.
To physically get to the falls you have to cross the small river that flows. If water isn't your thing, well I don't know what to say. Part of the adventure is sticking your feet in the dirt and getting a little wet. Don’t be a little bitch. The water was ice cold but very therapeutic to the joints. When you stand in front of the falls, the roaring sound is like a force of energy, slamming you like a paintball splattering your chest with no pain but inner peace.
If and when you do this hike bring your swim trunks or party hard and do as the frat boys do. With small swimming holes to lounge and relax, the scenery is spectacular. Little Mashel falls is a beautiful experience of an adventure. Pack your snacks and your water sources i.e. beer, and hike this beautiful small waterfall. Don’t forget to pick up after yourself, don’t be a dick. Stay wild and always stay free.
