PNW Pink Salmon Run

I look forward to the Pink salmon run here in the PNW. It happens only every two years! I couldn’t wait for the 16th of August to come quickly enough. It’s been a full week of fishing and the run hasn’t slowed down at all, in fact it feels like it’s still going to peak at some point soon.

I head down to the Puyallup River with my friends here in beautiful Washington State. The river becomes full with anglers skipping work and school rushing to get a spot to drop a line. Around here its combat fishing and it can get rough.
With my net tucked into my waders I head out into the water, at low tide when possible, and cast to about 5 feet from the other bank. Cast it to eleven o’clock and then point down the river. Start reeling in and feel that weight bouncing on the bottom just waiting for a fish to grab at the leader. It’s an incredible feeling to hook up and feel the power of these salmon.

I run ten pound line with a ½ oz cannonball weight and run a 6-7 foot leader with some flashy corkies and my #1 hook. On my nine foot Lamiglass the weight feels like a ton! I love the sensitivity Lamiglass offers. For me it’s been a game changer.

Holding that rod up river and trying to get that salmon in the net is such a heart pounding experience and I just can’t get enough of it! As long as I can stand in the river, I’ll be fishing for these awesome salmon.

Pack your waders and your gear and get on the river for these beauties. Always follow the rules and regulations and have fun. Hope to see you guys on the river. Tight lines!
